WINE GUIDE
Winter 2007
Your guide to the finest wines at the fairest prices:
You will find several outrageously compelling "new" white wines in this Wine Guide. "New"
because not too many years ago one's hunt for such wines would frequently prove futile. If, of course, one knew
what these unknown imports were anyway.
The red wines reviewed encompass a thoroughly balanced diversity: from light to full--a wine for every palate.
Enjoy!
REVERE THIS RED WINE
Chateauneuf du Pape, the small town outside Avignon which gives name to the famous wine means "the Pope's New Home."
It's rather not new now, and, I'm still curious as to why the Pope's "new home" contained a dungeon.
Ponder this while experiencing the profoundly sensuous Chateauneuf du Pape from Mas de Boislauzon.
FERVENT ABOUT FURMINT
Furmint doesn't necessarily freshen one's breath but it sure refreshes one's faith in the existence of super,
one-of-kind white wines. Furmint is the grape responsible for Hungary's illustrious late-harvest Tokaji wines.
Producer Oremus naturally makes prestigious Tokaji but I fell in love with its dry Furmint - an extremely exciting
and expressive eclectic white wine!
SPANISH RED SPURS SUPERLATIVES
Spuriously and speedily. Say Sacra Natura, a superb dry red from Spain's eastern Terra Alta denomination
(near star winemaker studded Priorat). The family bodega grows its grapes organically and declares so right on the
front label. Composed of Carinena, Merlot, Cab Sauv, Syrah, and Tempranillo, this is one dynamic red wine and another
feather in Spain's wine cap.
PARDON ME SIR, DO YOU HAVE ANY PETIT CHABLIS?
If you don't, you should. Petit Chablis vineyards typically
grow atop the hillsides in the illustrious Chablis appellation. Oh, and Petit Chablis tend to bear a more petit price
than Chablis (and many Chablis darn-well deserve their price!). La Chablisienne Petit Chablis induced a temporary state
of rapture when I enjoyed it with a simple shrimp cocktail. Sometimes, it requires so little to have so much.

ITALIAN DYNAMIC WINE DUO
From Campania, think Pompeii, the winery Terredora DiPaolo focuses on revitalizing
the region's historic grapes. The winery's owners, family name Mastroberardino, control significant high quality vines.
The ancient Aglianico grape makes the remarkable red while the likewise ancient Falanghina grape creates the distinguished
white wine.

SHIRAZ THAT BARES ALL
Well worth a peek, I promise. If you haven't fallen for Shiraz yet, you will upon trying Rockbare. The winemaker,
Tim Burvill, sources grapes from old vines located in Australia's highly esteemed McClaren Vale region. He succeeds
in his quest for superior fruit: this is one of the finest Aussie Shirazes available for under $23. High praise for
the Stelvin closure, too.
WAITING FOR GODELLO
No, not some freaky Japanese horror flick, but the prize white wine of northwest Spain's Valdeorras denomination.
While many consider Spain hotâ - and, figuratively for wine, it certainly is - Valdeorras in Galicia is relatively cool.
This permits propitious ripening time for the precious white grapes. In Godello you'll trust after you taste the
excellent Castelo do Papa.
ANOTHER PINOT NOIR SCORE!
And from Pinot Noir's home country, France. Oh, dear. It must be tres expensive. No, that's most Oregon Pinot Noir.
This Pinot hails from the humble south of France but modestly endowed it is not.
